Galicia Makes Best of Bad Situation
Galicia Makes Best of Bad Situation: "The Venezuela-based WBA designated Galicia for a WBA super-flyweight title eliminator on January 23 at the Kansas City’s Expo Center in Missouri against the very tough Martin 'El Gallo' Castillo of Mexico. The winner will face reigning champ Alexander 'Explosivo' Muñoz of Venezuela.
Telefutura Network, an off-shoot of the Spanish broadcasting giant Univision, will broadcast the scheduled 12-round bout on its two-hour 'Solo Boxeo' (Just Boxing) program from its Lincoln Center in New York."

Breaking schmooze: Boxing Day, St. Louis style
By Deb Peterson
12/16/2003
PUT UP YER DUKES: For those who overdose on Christmas sugarplums, the International Brotherhood of Sweet Scientists has the cure. On Dec. 27, the brotherhood is presenting Hoosierweight Championship Boxing with a 15-bout card at the South Broadway Athletic Club in Soulard.
And for the first time, the sweet scientists have lured some of St. Louis' finest. The card will include St. Louis police officers Andrew Ames and Stephen Ortbals, who will square off against Eureka firefighters James Thayer and Sean Dempsey.
Eureka's Kalief Waller is also set to fight and the city's fire department has snapped up 50 tickets in the 550-seat athletic club to support him and his colleagues. The newcomers haven't pushed such Hoosierweight favorites as 'Dirty' Dan Scott, Roberto Martinez and heavyweight title-holder Thomas 'Akita' Crone out of the ring. They're all set to rumble. Tickets are $7; fights are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. For info go to www.hoosierweight.com"

Strothkamp Is Two For Two In Guns 'N Hoses Boxing Event
By James B. Bartle, sullivannews.com

Sullivan resident, Sarah Strothkamp, has pushed her boxing record to 2-0, following Wednesday night's Budweiser Guns 'N Hoses boxing event held at the St. Louis Savvis Center. The annual event benefits Backstoppers, which provides aid to families of officers and firemen who lose their lives in the line of duty.
The single night event has helped to raise more than $1.2 million for the local Backstoppers organization. Wednesday, a19-card boxing event brought 17,293 spectators to their feet.
The St. Louis area firefighters defeated the St. Louis area law enforcement 11 bouts to 7.
For Strothkamp, this was the second year in a row to compete in the event and she was able to box the same opponent, Kim Allen, of the St. Louis Police Department.
Strothkamp represented the Webster Groves Fire Department where she has served for six months, the Sullivan Fire District where she has served six years and, incidentally, in her spare time she is also employed at Missouri Baptist Hospital as an LPN and paramedic.
Strothkamp, 5 feet 9 inches and 185 pounds, defeated Allen for the second time in as many years with a 5-0 decision; quite a feat considering Allen weighed in at 200 pounds and stands 6 feet 2 inches.
"This event is such a major adrenaline rush," said Strothkamp after winning her second boxing match. "I think I'll probably enter again next year, but will face a different opponent."
This year's event hit home with Strothkamp when a member of the Webster Groves fire department, Captain Dennis Mignerone, passed away while on duty.
"I was really nervous until I got into the ring and my parents were nervous, as well," said Strothkamp, whose parents are James and Cheryl Strothkamp of Sullivan.
Strothkamp told stltoday.com that the event this year and the loss of Captain Mignerone really hit home in a personal way, and that she really wanted to do this.
Strothkamp was the only local firefighter or police officer to compete in the annual boxing event. Last year Strothkamp and Sullivan police captain, Vernon Zelch, competed at the event and each came home with a belt.
